HOW TO: Stay Safe in Your Vehicle

Though improvements in technology help to lower the number of car accidents that occur each year, it still remains that most accidents are the result of human error. In order to lower your risk of getting into an accident it is vital to practice safe driving skills. Regardless of whether you are a first time driver or have been behind the wheel for many decades, in this post, Gregg S. Marcus, a Long Island Insurance Executive advises that everyone follow these same safety precautions:

Slow Down!
It goes without saying that driving the speed limit is one of the simplest ways to stay safe. The old expression “speed kills” proves to be true. Studies have shown for every mile per hour you drive over the speed limit you are 4 or 5% more likely to get into an accident. With this logic while traveling ten miles past the speed limit (which happens quite often) you have nearly a 50% more likely chance of being part of an auto accident.

Eliminate Distractions
Most states have already passed laws to make it illegal to use your cell phone while driving. This is only one of many items that can be considered a distraction when driving. Cell phones alone are the cause of over 2,000 automobile related deaths per year, while on the phone your reaction speed is reduced nearly 20%. Other leading causes of distractions while driving include eating and applying makeup.

Don’t Drive Tired
If a driver is tired enough it is possible they will actually fall asleep at the wheel and the results are obvious. You may feel that a few yawns before getting into your car is no big deal, but in fact when you are tired your reaction speed and observation skills are greatly impaired increasing the likely hood of an accident greatly.

With an increasing number of vehicles on the road every year accidents become more and more likely to occur. There are enough bad drivers on the road as it is, don’t be one of them! By using the above skills everyday you’re behind the wheel you will have a less likely chance of being in an auto accident and a greater chance of living a long healthy life.
