HOW TO: Reduce Basement Flooding Risk

It is not uncommon for rain showers to wreak havoc on any home’s basement, no matter the location. Simply resolving an obvious gutter or downspout leak can solve most basement water problems. Though a few water problems may have some causes that are difficult to identify and fix. In this post, Long Island Insurance Executive, Gregg S. Marcus, explains how most basement flooding issues can be solved using three basic steps: Evaluate, Inspect, and Install a Solution.

Evaluate the Problem
It should be noted if you cannot locate the source of the problem yourself that it is important to contact a professional. In order to properly evaluate your problem you must answer these questions:

  • Does the basement flood every year at approximately the same time?
  • Does the basement flood during random intervals?
  • Where is the basement flooding? Is it at the top of the basement wall? At the bottom of the wall? Through a floor drain?

Inspect the Location & Install a Solution
After evaluating the timing and location of the flood, it is then important to inspect the area in which water is entering and consider the following solutions:

  • Reshape the landscaping around the foundation of the building or home. If water is entering near the top of a wall, the cause could be an improperly sloped landscape angled toward the building, in which water is entering.
  • Extend and redirect the downspouts away from the foundation.
  • Caulk any cracks on the exterior or interior wall, around which the water is entering.
  • Consider hiring a professionally licensed contractor to install a waterproofing membrane.
  • If you possess an unfinished basement, it is suggested you apply an internal sealant that can be painted on the surface of the walls.

Consider These Alternatives
If the water appears to be entering near a floor drain or the foundation of the building consider a French drain or sump pump. French drains can be installed around the perimeter of the building in order to divert the water away from the foundation. A sump pump can be installed in the basement floor with a battery backup. Before you begin any project it is important to contact a licensed professional.
